The joys of sharing space with cats are many ... but stepping on headless mice is not on the list. I came in very late from work one night and started to sit down on the couch. For whatever reason (thank goodness) I put my hand down first and felt something furry. Thinking I was about to sit on a cat, I didn't sit. I turned to remove the offending cat from my spot and to my horror it was a HUGE field rat! It was almost the size of the cat! WOW! And I touched it with my bare hand!!! EWWWWW!!! Did the icky-dance for quite a bit, scrubbed my hands with lots and lots of soap and hot water, found a bag to put the critter in and soaked the cushion in disinfectant. Meanwhile, proud hunter cat was looking at me with a look on its face that said, "What the heck are you doing? This is how you treat my gift???" By the time I sat down (on the other end of the couch), the cat glared at me once again and stalked away, head and tail held high.

We had a cat who was an excellent hunter and who would often bring his still living victims into the house and release them in the bathtub where they were unable to escape and where he could finish them at his leisure.

Mornings the bathtub often looked like a crime scene complete with body parts and gore, missing only the yellow tape.

Other cats occasionally deposit a headless corpse on the kitchen floor where it is discovered early in the groggy-eyed morning by means of the bare foot.

I guess if forced to choose I would prefer either one of these rather than a bedfellow mouse.

Poor Lauren! Teeny left you the nicest present he could think of--cats do feel very sorry for us. Our hunting skills leave much to be desired. And at least it was still whole. It could have been worse ...

Dear delightful Lauren, thank you for all the laughing you brought into my morning! Yes, different points of view--something to keep in mind all the time, and hopefully with this same insightful lightness. Loving you, Margaret
