Two Lost Sentences

I was reading a book of Tobias Wolfe’s short stories. I had just read two sentences that told — not the secret of life — but what seemed to sum up the trouble with most relationships.

When I made this discovery, I could hardly keep my eyes open, and I was just going to remember where those two sentences were. I put the book face down and went to sleep.

The next day I hunted for those two sentences and couldn’t find them. I flipped through page after page. I am sure I read those two sentences. They were in the book. I am sure I didn’t dream them, yet where did they go?

Here is the gist of the two sentences.

“I seem to spend my life being annoyed with people for being who they are and not being what I want them to be. And the same people are annoyed with me because I am not what they want me to be.”

Does that not say it?

I will try again to find those two sentences in the collection of Tobias Wolf’s short stories, Our Story Beings, New and Selected Stories.

Meanwhile, if you find these two lost sentences, please let us know.

I think the answer to perfect relationships is to have the relationship with another “through” God. Make God the Middle Man.

Eventually the 3 become 2 and the 2 become 1.

1 indeed! 2 is too much a crowd.

Years ago in a meeting with Like thinking people A lady said I will try hard to love all people as they are and not as I like them to be. That made a deep impression on me and dayly, almost, I think of that. Makes live worth wile for me. Love you All Jack
