The Wendroff Moving Sale
This moving sale was a long time coming, and it was a great success! We had a turnout! There must have been a hundred people at least. It didn’t slow down. I mean there were throngs of people and hardly room to move! It was so hectic that there wasn’t a chance to put a Sold sign up on the little chest freezer for instance. Lauren sold the little chest freezer again after I had already sold it!
The day of the sale was fun! All the activity was so unlike my usual solitary at-the-computer life. We met some wonderful people.
We don’t have photos. How I wish we did. My camera isn’t working, and Lauren forgot to bring hers. I could have asked Jacqueline or June to bring theirs, but didn’t think.
Jacqueline sat at an ironing board with a cash box at the entry. She was a life-saver. I don’t know what we would have done without her. She was perfect. She greeted the people who came, collected the money, wrote down what was sold and for what, bagged or boxed everything that was sold. She was perfect. If you’re having a moving sale, I’ll rent Jacqueline out to you. You won’t find anyone better at the cash box than Jacqueline.
June stayed in Lauren’s apartment at the gem and bead table. Lauren used to make jewelry and had so much great stuff. June, as a matter of fact, had come over the night before as well and helped organize all the jewelry makings. June is a natural organizer, utterly fabulous. I will also rent her out to the highest bidder! (June and Jacqueline, I hope you don’t mind!)
To give you an idea of the amount of beads and such Lauren had, one person bought over $300 dollars-worth. Another $97. And June and Lauren made some wonderful jewelry-making friends.
There were six people who asked us if the house were for sale! One lovely couple would like to rent Lauren’s apartment. Five or six people asked about buying it!
We met some wonderful people — did I say that? — and also some really well-behaved children. I realized how happy young children make me feel. I gave them little stuff I could find and hugged and kissed them.
There was one man in his early twenties who recently moved here and just the day before had moved into a house, and he bought lots of stuff. He was happy, and I was happy. He is also one of the people interested in buying our house!
Sometimes I amaze myself at my boldness, so when he asked if the house were for sale, what did I say to him? I said, “Do you have money?” That is kind of nervy, isn’t it?
Well, he does, and also his parents would live in one of the two apartments and share in the purchase.
I want to tell you something else about this fine young man and what a pied piper he is. He came back later with five gorgeous young ladies who trailed after him who also bought lovely things.
Now, getting ready for the yard sale wasn’t so easy. Lifting, lugging, running up and down stairs I had used muscles I never had used, and I can’t believe how stiff I was and much stuff I have, and that’s after 95% had been sold at auction way back! And there was still stuff I didn’t get to put out. I never did get to price. I just had to wing it at the time.
Lauren had priced her items. I was always telling her: “You’re not asking enough!” And she told me: “You’re asking too much!” I suppose that together, we were just right!
After the sale was over, Lauren took the four of us out to eat at Aranda’s Mexican Buffet. It’s at a gas station, of all places. All the quacamole you can eat!
Another time I’ll tell you more about the moving sale and how zany it was.
