The mystery of language
I love words, and I think about them a lot. How did they ever get started? And all the different languages and the differences and similarities among them. And rhyming words. Why is rhyming so much fun?
rose and nose
folly and jolly, molly and dolly, holly and golly
How can the exact same word in different languages have such different meanings? And how come in one language we have so many words that express the same meaning yet not quite?
Isn’t our ability to speak something like magic? And writing and typing? And the languages of math and physics and chemistry. And baby language. And sign languages. And poetry! And song!
All over the world, man is a creature who speaks. We sure want to communicate. And why else do we have voices? And yet language is a great mystery.
I believe it was Jean Paul Sartre who said something like this:
“If man would use an honest speech, all the troubles of the world would go away.”
