My new office chair

naughtyball3

I am in love with balance balls.  Now when I’m at the computer, which is almost always, I sit on a balance ball.

When I’m waiting for big batches of email to appear about twenty times during the day, as I wait, I bounce to my heart’s content. When I am trying to think, I bounce the whole time.

I’m sitting on a balance ball now! The one I’m sitting on is white and looks like the moon.

Here are two pictures of balance ball chairs. I don’t have the chair, just the balance ball. I don’t think the chair is necessary unless you’re in an office with many people, and it would be a nuisance to the other people when you get up, and your friendly balance ball rolls over to them.

My posture was getting really hunchy. Somehow, on the balance ball (which my daughter refers to as the naughty ball) I sit up straight. This lady balancing is not me.

Here’s what I read in various places:

The key points are that you have nothing to slouch against when you’re tired so you’re forced to support yourself (because of this you also find that you don’t sit for such long periods and you get up and walk around more - exactly what is recommended), and you naturally sit with a much better posture.

The key to getting your core muscles working and increasing their strength is to try “active sitting.” Active sitting is sitting with “super-powered” posture.

Try it:

* Put your feet flat on the floor.
* Sit as tall as you can.
* Straighten your back.
* Puff out your chest.
* Pull in your chin slightly.
* Push your shoulders down.
* Move your shoulder blades closer together behind you.

Notice how your body feels. Can you feel all the different muscles working?

Sitting this way means that you’re working your muscles, no matter where you’re sitting. The more you practice active sitting, the easier it will become. #

Of course, I have to remind myself.

LOL Jack … and being on ships was such great practice! You are a natural.

Me, I think the slight stability of having the ball in a chair thingie looks very appealing, but would it have the same effect? Is there enough movement of the ball to still exercise the core.

This really appeals to me as it seems like a very lazy way to exercise. I’d be sitting (a favorite activity) and exercising at the same time. COOL.

There are simple inexpensive rings and, um, “saucers” to stabilize the ball during times when you don’t want to exercise.
