My daughter’s adventures in Chicago
It has been a long time since I told you about the adventures of my daughter in Chicago.
You may remember that about six months ago, Lauren came very close to getting a job she really wanted as a personal assistant to a philanthropist, and yet she didn’t get the job.
Then she had months and months of no interviews, not even one. She was doing everything right, and nothing was happening. It was really getting dire.
Maybe it is really true that God always has something better in mind for us.
A temp agency called Lauren for a three-week job at the corporate offices of a bank. Let me mention that this is a bank that has never needed any help from the government. This international bank did everything right, and they were far more than solvent.
Interestingly, the temp agency sent Lauren’s resume for this job and no one else’s. Hers was the only one. Lauren had to have an intensive background check and got the temp job without an interview! This is unheard of, isn’t it!
Working in a bank was not exactly Lauren’s heart desire. For me, working in a bank conjures up a picture of a dull prescribed routine. Lauren, on the other hand, has a great attitude.
Let me backtrack a little. Lauren had been seriously thinking of becoming a certified paralegal through a course of study.
Lo and behold, this temporary job was in the legal department of this bank!
After the employee Lauren was replacing came back, the bank got Lauren a cubby, her own computer, phone etc. and she became an administrative assistant to six attorneys — still on a temporary basis, however.
Incidentally, Legal Assistants at this bank typically have three attorneys to take care of. Lauren was assigned six. Lauren has had as many as nine attorneys on the days when one of the other numerous assistants is out. In addition, Lauren has been given some special projects to work on. She is a whiz-bang.
Will you forgive a mother for bragging about her daughter a little? Lauren is good at prioritizing work, asking the right questions, AND she likes to work hard, and she stays calm.
Furthermore, all of the attorneys she has been working with are delights. Whatever you’ve heard of attorneys is not true, not here anyway. The attorney vice-presidents and senior counsels she has been working with have gone out of their way to show appreciation, and Lauren is soaking it up. Yet she is still a temp.
This week she was told to apply for a legal assistant opening that will be posted within the next few days. She will have to go through the regular hiring process, and doesn’t this sound promising? We’re crossing our fingers and not counting the chickens before they are hatched. We’re sure happy.
Here is what is truly beautiful. Lauren LOVES working at this company in the department she is in. It has been some time since she has had a job where she was treated so well and was so happy. What she is hoping that with a permanent job, she will still be able to work with the attorneys she has been working with. She is devoted to them.Wouldn’t you want to hire her too?
Is it really true then that when God closes one door, he opens another?
