Here’s the story:
I recently took out a post office box. The other day I found two letters in my box. One of the letters was for me, and one was for someone else. I imagine it was for the person who had had P.O. Box 2064 before me.
Good citizen that I am, I went to the nice post office lady — her name is Sherry — and I tossed the envelope on the counter. “This isn’t for me, ” I said.
Later I tore open my envelope — but, lo and behold — carelessly, I had left my envelope on the counter and kept the stranger’s by mistake. It was the other person’s envelope I had torn open!!!
I discovered that the previous renter of my P.O. Box had many thousands of dollars in stocks and bonds. I didn’t read further, honest. I knew this was a federal offense to kidnap and read other people’s mail.
The post office was closed by then. I stuffed the letter into my back pack, and the next day I went back to the post office to confess. I confessed, and Sherry, God bless her, did not blink an eye.
BUT, while I was there, no matter how many times I emptied my back pack, I could not find the letter that wasn’t mine.
Sherry said, “Well, bring it in tomorrow.”
I did, and I have evaded prison ever since.
