How quickly an accident happens

First of all, Xena is really progressing. She readily takes food from my hand now. She likes to eat from my hand.

Other dogs we’ve had kinda train us. They sit and kind of wiggle in excitement, and so train us to give them something to eat right away.

Xena is such a lady. She just stands at a distance somewhere in my radius. That’s all she does is stand there. As quickly as possible, I hand feed her. She loves raw food and panir. She does not like vegetables or nuts. She does love soups that I make and will lap them up from a bowl.

Lauren, Jacqueline, and I take Xena on long walks just about every day. We go to the various walking trails around and let Xena loose. She runs up hill and down dale. It is beautiful to watch her. And she comes back to be petted whenever Lauren calls her, and then she merrily runs off again.

She seems also to be quite content to let Jacqueline and me pet her when she stops. She loves all the dogs she meets on the trails. And sometimes she will let strangers pet her without flinching. All the while, Xena never makes a sound. She doesn’t bark or whine. I believe she is a healing angel of some kind.

Our friend Jacqueline is one of the dearest people you could ever meet. Jacqueline appears more reserved than she really is, and her gentle side doesn’t always show on the surface. You should see how Xena has brought out Jacqueline’s softness. Jacqueline can now sweet-talk Xena with the best of us! It is extra sweet to see Jacqueline with Xena.

Sunday, Yael and her dog Nafi and Jordan, a dog Yael was taking care of, and Lauren, Jacqueline, Xena and I went walking on a trail that we were not familiar with. I have to tell you that, even more wonderful than seeing Xena run up and down gullies and hop across fields is to see her and her friend Nafi running and romping together.

We came to a culvert. There was a cement wall on the walking trail side. Unknown to us, there was a cliff on the right covered with trees and foliage. We didn’t consider that the cliff extended that way. We didn’t even think of the possibility. We were so preoccupied with so many of us — three dogs, four people — we weren’t thinking at all.

Xena was doing her usual joy of running.

Not seeing ahead through the brush, she ran into space and dropped about thirty feet.

Some of us could not bear to look.

Amazingly, Xena got up. It was a miracle that she was alive.  And she was able to walk, but she was limping.

Yael ran down the cliff to get Xena.

Yael and Lauren carried her to the car which was at some distance, and we got Bill Pollack, D.V.M., to see her. Xena was in good condition considering. Her limp came from her right shoulder. Bill thought her right shoulder had taken the brunt of the fall  (much as my right shoulder did when I fell off the treadmill) and that her shoulder was the cause of her limping.  He was sure that she had rolled after she landed, and that saved her from far greater injury.

Bill gave her a cortisone shot.  He also gave her aconite for trauma which I believe someone on this blog had once suggested for her. Bill wanted to keep Xena overnight for observation. Lauren, rightly thought Xena was better off with us, for one of us would be by her side constantly.

Bill’s practice is in his house. He said he would hear Xena and come down. But the thing is that Xena doesn’t whine or cry or bark. There would have been nothing for him to hear.

Bill told us to confine Xena to a small place. For about ten days, she must not climb up or down stairs or enter into any activity. The danger time would be when she was not in so much pain and felt better. We were to make sure to keep her from frolicking and any kind of jumping up or down, for she could well cause herself further injury.

Xena isn’t to eat until Tuesday morning except for broth. I went right home and made her some chicken broth which she laps up. Xena is so sore that all she does is lie in one place and not move at all. She hurts and doesn’t make a sound.

We are all still quite upset. How did we let this happen to her? And why Xena — who had already suffered more pain than anyone should ever have to — why should this happen to an angel like her?

I try to look for the good in this.  Xena was spared. She is alive, and it could have been a lot lot worse. If it had to happen, it is better it happened now when she is more comfortable with us and knows that we love her.

We all would give a lot to have prevented this from happening to dear Xena.

It was an accident. How were you to know? How was Xena to know? Now, though, perhaps through the loving care of a physical injury by you and Lauren, her memories of past abuse will fade even more.

You are all in my thoughts and prayers–much love and healing heading to Xena.

There are no accidents… only perfection in everything.

God blesses in many ways.

Don’t pretend to understand the whys of this, if in fact there are any, but the connection, Gloria, with your own mishap seems blatant to me. This will turn out as well or even better, but perhaps there are lessons that didn’t get noticed at the time. Or one was preparation for the other. Who knows? Keep watch. Hands layed on from here.

Dear Xena,

how are you doing three days after your little accident? You must know we all hope for your swift recovery. After all, summer is approaching and there will be a lot of romping that needs to be done by someone. How about you? During this quiet time of healing, I’m sure your heart will also heal some more. I remember God saying that you lead a blessed life, and so be it.

Fondly,
Jochen

Hi Gloria,

When I read the post naturally I was sorry to hear about Xena’s experience. While conventional thought about animals is that they aren’t really “sentient” creatures, from my experience they are very aware of everything going on around them. Moreover, they are more than simply “aware,” they are Divine in every sense of the term. Unlike us, they are not “veiled” but are fully aware of their connection to God/Spirit in every moment of their lives. Underneath their seemingly less intelligent exterior is light as bright as that of humans, and I know for certain they are very deliberate about taking on certain missions.

I say this because last summer our dog, Heidi, was diagnosed with a brain tumor within just 4 weeks of our friend (and her longstanding dog-sitter) being told he had a malignant brain mass. The so-called “coincidence” of this was too much for me so I contacted an animal communicator, who quickly learned that Heidi agreed to take on this energy to be of healing help to Rick. When I heard that, I didn’t doubt it for a minute, but naturally I was deeply saddened by it. She ultimately died in December, and the good news is that Rick is doing splendidly. Did she play a role in saving his life? I for one believe quite strongly that is the case.

So what does all this mean as it relates to Xena? My sense is that she knew exactly what would happen to her but proceeded to do it anyway. Why? Perhaps because in some way she needed to get your attention about something. Or maybe she needed this physical experience to once and for all purge negative energy from her system that was associated with the abuse she endured earlier in her life. In the end what counts most is that she is alive and well, and it sounds as if she’ll fully recover. And that, of course, is something to be very grateful for (which I know you are!).

I would never want anything to happen to our girl, Xena, of course, but we are getting closer because of this. Both physically and emotionally. Xena would not have let me pick her up before, and now I need to carry her quite a bit, and she is much more comfortable with me holding her.

She is also doing better physically every day, and today, she walked over to the car - she wanted to go on a hike. This situation would be a lot harder with most dogs. Xena is just very good, she seems to understand she needs to take it easy.

Beloved Jeff, oh, yes, it is very possible that Xena prevented something from happening to one of us. I understand everything you’re saying. She is a miracle girl in any case.

Beloved Lauren, Xena is so lucky to have you.

Beloved Jochen, Xena is a little embarrassed. Not only can she not write, she can’t talk. But I know she felt your love and all the love from everyone here, and if she could comment, she would. She would thank you all for your good wishes. Xena doesn’t take anything for granted. She sure knows how to appreciate.
