How To End All Wars II
I do not follow politics in the world, but I do know that the little country of Iran is surrounded by armies, and somehow Iran is viewed as hostile to bear arms.
There is a Heavensubscriber in Iran whom I will call Ali. He is a family man. Has a beautiful wife and three children, and parents that he respects. He turns to the East and prays five times a day. He fasts faithfully during certain holidays, and he embraces Islam. An engineer by trade, he is also a poet by nature. He sends me emails from his heart. The words he writes remind me of Persia and the fairytales I used to read, and of Hafiz and Kahlil Gibran that I sometimes read now. Ali calls me sister, and I call him brother.
Ali has phoned me at Christmas and New Year’s. I mention this to show Ali’s exquisite heart and manners. Why haven’t I thought to call my friend Ali in Iran to bless his holidays? Why don’t I call anyone on Christmas or the Jewish New Year?
Furthermore, when Ali calls, he apologizes for his English, which is actually quite good. Why haven’t I ever apologized to Ali for my speaking only English and not knowing one word of his language? (Actually, that’s not true. I think bazaar is a Persian word that has made it into the English language. There must be others.)
Anyway, here is my second plan to end all wars. It is so simple. I am sure it would work. I am very excited about it. Tell me if you like it!
Everyone in the world is to have a penpal! Everyone of writing age writes to and gets to make friends and exchange photos with someone in another land! Of course, everyone must write to someone in a country far different from theirs. Westerners will write to non-westerners. Peoples who are reputed to have mutual animosity will, of course, write to each other.
Imagine if all the Palestinians and all the Israelis were penpals, how different the Middle East might be? Squabbles and war would not arise, and if they did, the will of the majority would prevail and war would be snuffed out before you could say Jack Rabbit.
What should we name this plan? What ideas do you have?
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.
–Psalms 133:1
