Dear Microsoft, Firefox, etc.

Dear Microsoft, Firefox, and every other computer program and company in the world,

Is anyone listening? Have I not asked you to stop updating? I beg you. Once and for all, please stop updating.

I do understand that you mean to give benefit. In my experience, sorry to say, you hinder.

Why do you all constantly reinvent the wheel? XP is wonderful, and then, Microsoft, you went and made Vista which I fortunately do not have. I have not heard one good thing about Vista, and this is from people who are not like me but who are extremely computer-savvy.

I want to say that you have all good intentions, but I do have to wonder whether you are thinking of your users or perhaps have other motives in mind. Let us say that you are entirely altruistic, still, must you interfere with what is already working fine?

Now, Mozilla Firefox or whatever your name is, I hesitate to fuss about anything when you are free. How do I have the nerve to complain when you absolutely, without question, give 100% from the goodness of your heart?

However, before you updated, if I automatically pressed X to close you down without thinking, you would ask me if I really wanted to close you down. That was nice and most appreciated. Alas, I probably never wrote to you to praise you. I am sorry. Still, do you now have to take me at my word when my fingers mindlessly press that fated X, and to my dismay, horror and surprise, each and every time you go right ahead and close me down without giving me a second chance? And then I have to start all over again, and it takes so long.

Beloved Mozilla Firefox, I never want to close you down. Will you kindly remember this, or at least reinstate the question that allows me to realize what I am doing? I ask you, is this really too much to ask?

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Your friend,

Gloria

Hi Gloria~

The only time I remember Firefox asking if I really wanted to close it down is when I have multiple tabs open. Occasionally I mean to close one of the individual tabs and will click on the big X to close the whole program by mistake. That’s when Firefox asks if I really want to close all the tabs. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t.

If you only have one window open, you won’t see any tabs up on top and Firefox will close without notice when you click on the big X. If you see tabs across the top, each tab will close without notice if you click on its own little X but if you click on the big X in the extreme upper right it should ask you before closing all the tabs at once.

I don’t think any of this changed with any recent upgrade. Try it the next time you have multiple tabs open and nothing that would hurt to close. If all the tabs close at once without warning there is a setting to change that but no point going thru that unless you need it.

Hmmm… Glorious Gloria,

A few things you can do.

1. Click on HISTORY. Or press Control H. YOu will see all the sites you were recently visited. You can click on any of them to re-open that webpage.

2. Apply the Law of Attraction. Do you LOVE your computer and the huge capacity for instantaneous global communication. OR do you curse the advances and adventures of the unfolding genius at work at the constantly upgrading of global communication.

3. Do you VISUALIE your computing life being glorious, fun and easy. Or do you send out poisonous vibes to computerland and cyberspace that it will be FRUSTRAting, no fun, and hard work.

Do you get a CHARGE out of whining about your computer.

How ’bout you spend a little time getting computer savvy and raising the bar on your own Friend Computer’s needs and lifestyle.

I love to have teenages and young people show me things. And every so often, one of my geeky friends will visit or call and show me more computer tricks… so then I get un-boondogled and feel empowered in my journey to master computing.

Now, I even made a website to help others learn some of the things I have learned
http://FreeAndEasyWeb.blogspot.com

Updates are ESSENTIAL to keep the hackers, spammers, and spyers at bay.

Please consider re-creating your relationship with computers and cyberspace to one of loving friendship and appreciation rather than enmity and frustration.

What you think is what you get, right?

Your computer will thank you and respond appreciatively.

The Computers for Dummies type books helped me regain my sanity and gave me LOTS of skills when I was wrestling with the frustration of not knowing what I was doing.

When I got a new updated computer, a lot of the older problems I was having also dissolved.

I believe you have written that change is part of the structure of the universe. Cyberlife is on the cutting edge of change in our universe.

It is a tremendous tool to help humanity communicate and advance rapidly.

LOVE you Computer - and ALL it can do for you and for our world with your generous and healing messages.

Just a few thoughts on the matter :)

Thank you for all you do.

Blessings,

Pat Crosby

And, Gloria, doesn’t Firefox offer you any options as far as upgrades are concerned? In my browser, God bless it (repeatedly), I am free to choose between automatic and manual upgrading. I would never entrust myself to anyone who tries to forcefeed me. Did that once…….

Beloved Jochen and Charles,

Yes, I do know how to close a tab when I want to.

I can have four or so tabs open, and I carelessly click the big X up right, and the whole browser is gone. It didn’t use to happen, but it sure does now and has been for quite some time!

I would love to have that warning message back. Please tell me how.

Reply from Jochen Lehner on April 14, 2008

Dearest Gloria, it will probably be a little difficult to explain since in my Firefox everything is in German and I can only guess at the equivalent English items on your menues.
But click “Firefox” in the top menue bar. Click “Settings” (”Einstellungen”). Then click “Tabs”. There, it should give you the option to check something like “Warning if a window with several Tabs is about to be closed”.

Reply from Gloria on April 14, 2008

Beloved Jochen, I found Settings. There is nothing that resembles tabs. I’ve tried everything I can think of. I am trying to keep a positive attitude. I would love to have the program stay open if I happen to carelessly press the big bad X!

Reply from Carol Maurer on April 14, 2008

Gloria dear, on top go to “Tools” (next to help), it will give you a menu to choose from. Choose options. Next menu, choose features. There you will find the settings for to select for the tabbed browsing.

Hope this works for you! I am always clicking the top red X and do appreciate the warning!

Hi All you p.c. experts, I wish I knew what you are talking about. I wanted to send on a e-mail and it did not want to go. Patience Jack shut down and try again tomorrow. What if it does the same.Shut down and forget it others have already send it on. My computer has really taught me

Reply from Jack van Raders on April 14, 2008

patience. See what I mean, I pressed the wrong button but I will continue here. Mieke even tells me that I am more patient than before. Thank you computer. Love you all. Jack

Reply from Gloria on April 15, 2008

Dear Carol, it worked. That is, I found the place to check that I want to be warned before shutting down. I haven’t tested it yet, but it is reassuring. I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t work.

Dear Jack, ah, your computer has taught you patience! I guess I have had the attitude that my computer is supposed to be understanding and patient with me. Well, I suppose it is!

Reply from Gloria on April 15, 2008

Oh, no, it did NOT work. Without thinking, I pressed the X, the one on the upper right, and the whole Mozilla Firefox closed down.

Do I have to reboot the whole computer for the tab to work?

Reply from Gloria on April 15, 2008

Most dear Pat Crosby, I just discovered your post above, and I am learning so much from you!

1. This about Control H is totally new to me. This I can do.

2. I love what a computer can do. I am grateful to have a computer. I did name mine Schatzi which means sweetheart, yet our relationship is not always smooth. I have to confess that my computer is more loyal to me than I am to it.

3. I will start visualizing much joy from my computer. I will feel it. You are right. What you think is what you get. All things considered, my laptop has been very good to me. I am going to change my thinking and my expectations.

4. It must be that I do get a charge out of griping about my computer. It does give me material for this blog!

5. Pat, I have looked at the Computer for Dummies books, and I freeze. My feeling (perhaps my excuse) was that they are so left-brain. If someone could write a right-brain instruction book with art and metaphors, I might stand a chance. Someone once gave me one of those video-tapes that are advertised on TV, guaranteed to teach you? It was a turn-off for me. The dummy books and videos want my brain to do what it apparently is not capable of doing. (Did you happen to read the blog entry, How My Mind Works?) I think I need a picture book, a very simple book made for pre-school or something. Maybe instruction in color. I’m not putting myself down here. I am a divergent thinker, and what works well for most doesn’t work for me.

Pat, I do love the way your mind works in such a kind orderly friendly loving way.

Tell us more.

God bless you.

With love,

Gloria

P.S. Heavenletters are what God says, not me.

Gloria, I’m not certain whether you solved this or not. When you check the box that says “Warn me when closing multiple tabs”, the warning will only come up when you have more than one window open in tabs. If you only have one window open and no tabs are showing, clicking on the big X will close Firefox with no warning and you can’t change that.

If Firefox still closes all multiple tabs with no warning when you click on the big X, go back again clicking on “Tools”, “Options”, “Tabs”, and make sure that there is a check mark in the box next to “Warn me when closing multiple tabs”. If the check mark isn’t there, just click on the box. Make sure you click on “OK” when you are done.

It should work immediately, but if not, open up Firefox again, open up more than one tab, and try it again. If it still doesn’t work, let us know.

Dear Charles,

I did reboot, and now I do see the warning message.

However, never fear, that is not the end of my dilemma.

Now, for some reason I don’t understand and was not the case before, there are six tabs open not above (only four above) but six at the bottom. I don’t get it. I usually only have one there. Now as I try to close the bottom tabs, it tells me that I will close all four tabs above. I guess I have to and start all over again.

From today’s Heavenletter, #2699 Expanded Awareness, it’s clear that I’m the one culpable, and yet, sometimes I really feel jinxed on the computer. My daughter says that things happen to me on the computer that she’s never seen happen to anyone else, things that no one could make happen.

But, anyway, I will be a good sport now, close out, and start over.

God bless you all.

With love,

Gloria

Okay, now the weird thing, I did close all the bottom tabs but one, and the ones on top stayed right where I wanted them! Mystery!

Reply from Charles Fines on April 15, 2008

Gloria, when what looks like tabs open up at the bottom, that is a whole new window opening up, which is sort of like another copy of your Firefox program running at the same time. Some people do this by choice but I don’t think you want to.

If you can find your way back to Tools, Options, Tabs, you will see “New pages should be opened in:” which is followed by two choices: “a new window” or “a new tab”. You want a dot in the little circle in front of “a new tab”. If it’s not there, click on it.

When you have a page open and you want to open another page in a new tab, do you hold down the Control key when you do it? That’s the only way I know how to make it open in a new tab instead of replacing the one you are in.

Anyway, if you are doing that and you hit the Shift key instead of the Control key by mistake, the new page will open up as a new window instead of a tab with what looks like a tab at the bottom. This is easy to do since the Shift key is right above the Control key.

Opening new pages in a new window was the original way of doing this. Opening them in tabs was considered an improvement since it lets you close a bunch of pages all at once if you want. Plus when you see the tab at the top it doesn’t get confused with other programs you may have running which show up at the bottom.

Reply from Gloria on April 15, 2008

Beloved Charles,

You understand very well.

I did not mean to open new windows. I do have the dot in front of new tab.

I have never pressed down Control key when I want to open a new tab. I think all those opened windows at the bottom came about because I was waiting and waiting for a link I pressed somewhere to open. It was taking so long that I thought I hadn’t kept the mouse down long enough, so I pressed again — several times, I guess!

Are you a teacher, Charles? A tech support? A designer?

You sure do a great job of making something clear and easy to follow. Thank you — and everyone — for all the patience you extend.

With love and blessings,

Gloria
