One is: “I never ask angels in regard to computer problems. I better ask google…..” Now, that made me smile.

Two is when you say there is no problem that cannot be solved.

Three is the overall theme of what you wrote. Your response points to communication and miscommunication which seem to be the essence of all difficulties we humans have, the need to listen, to understand, and our need to be heard and understood.

But I want to give you some inside view what is happening in this mysterious things.

Just imagin you sitting before the switched off computer. It’s just some piece of hardware stealing the place on your table. Unless you switch it on.

The first thing is that the main parts get some electricity. Some blood so to say. The first parts waking up are the CPU (Central Processing Unit. The brain so to say) and the BIOS (Basic Input Output System. The Brainstem brain so to say. Responsible for the basic things as the name says.)

They do some little conversation.

Yes. Are the Input Output Systems online?

Wait a minute……. (BIOS looks, if the keyboard and mouse, the input sytems, are connected and if the computer monitor, the output system is there)

is the RAM (Random access memory. The short time memory area so to say) ready?

Yes. Ready to go!

The CPU now checks, if it can find a OS (Operating System. Most of the people known as Windows XP) on the CDrom or hard drive. Most of the time it finds it on the hard drive.

When found is awakes the kernel of the OS. Can be seen as someone waking up in the morning. Now this kernel takes over and uses the CPU to do all the neccessary operations to bring the thing up to live.

Now all this things happen, you normally see when switching on. Better to see, you see something. Sitting in front of the screen twirling tumbs. Watching this window flag flutter and the green bar turning round and round. But belive me, in the background a lot is going on. Anyhow, finally it’s up and running and you hopfully see, what you have seen before you switched it of.

Now we are in some complete other area of the computer universe. A very complex one. So to say the result of millions of software engineers. Yes, millions.

Only to do a simple mathematical operations needs some hundred lines of code. But as this was alredy done by someone this does not need to be done again and again. All this basic stuff is collected in libraries which the following generation of software engineers can us again.

So the knowledge of how to program computers was little in the beginning but then went up at a certain point in history expotential.

So just Win XP has about 45 Millionen lines of code.

Together with the programs you use to start when working with the computer my rough guess is that about 150 million lines of code needs to interact with each other. Amacing, isn’t it?

Anyhow, if you start your email client or your browser an other computer universe is added to the system. The Internet. Enabling you to communicate worldwide in just seconds. I wont go into details here but just give you a living example.

Browser to CPU:

there is a request to open a website. Are we ready?

CPU to browser:

yes, the gateway to the Internet is open. Give me the address and I will handle it over.

Browser to CPU:

CPU to browser:

thanks. I will route it to the gateway.

CPU to gateway:

here is a Internet address. Take it and push it into the Internet.

The gateway takes the address and is pushing it into the Internet. The request is rushing to the next DNS server (Domain name server.

The Internet does not speak human language. Only numbers. So heavenletters.org needs to be translated into numbers. That is what the DNS server is doing.)

If the DNS server knows heavenletters.org he translates it into numbers (named IP) and leads the request to the next gateway available on the journey to the target server. So it passes some more gateways until it finally reaches the hevenletters.org server.

The request knocks on the door.

Request to server:

I have some http (Hyper transfere protocol. The HTML protocol thing which is showing the web pages) request. Are you running a http programm?

Server to request:

yes. Just come on in.

The server takes over the request and handles it to the http program. The http program looks, if it can find a page http://heavenletters.org/angelsplace/index.php.

Yes, there we are! But wait. It has a php extension. So it is a php program. Next is…..

HTTP program to php interpreter:

I have some php program for you. Please take over and process it.

php interpreter to HTTP program:

ok. I take over and see, what I can do.

the php interpreter runs the program and sees, ups, some more data needed! So……

php interpreter to mysql database:

I need some data from you. It’s xyz. Please have a look and send back if you find it.

the mysql database looks up xyz.

mysql database to php interpreter:

found! here it is.

the php interpreter continues to process and when finished contacts the HTTP program again.

php interpreter to HTTP program:

everything processed! Here is your http data.

HTTP program to php interpreter:

thanks! I will push it back to Glorias computer.

But wait a minute. Where is Glorias computer?

Ah, know I remeber. Glorias computer got one of this magic IP numbers from her host when she connected to the internet

(IP=Internet Protocol address a unique address that certain electronic devices use in order to identify and communicate with each other on a computer network.)

And the request took it all the way with him until he reached the target server heavenletters.org and gave it over.

The reqests job was done then. He told what is asked for which is http://heavenletters.org/angelsplace/index.php together with Glorias IP so the server knows where to deliver it back. The request the went into nowhere as his job was done. Anyhow……

Server to gateway:

I have some HTTP data here for Glorias computer. Please take it over and route it to it’s destination.

The gateway take over the HTTP data and pumps it into the lines together with the IP and wuuushhhh finally it ends up at the gateway of Glorias computer.

The gateway studies the data and finally…..

Gateway to itself:

ah. There we are. The reqest found it’s destination. Yes. That’s for me!

Gateway to CPU:

I just received the requested HTTP data. Please take over!

The CPU takes it over and……

CPU to Browser:

here is your data. Please take over!

The Browser takes over the data, processes it and gives it back to the CPU which routes it to the graphic card which processes it and finally, yes finally it appears on Glorias screen!

Anyhow, hope this has given you a idea how complex this computer systems are. And they are based on the interaction of a lot of different software programs. Build and constructed by humans.

In case of this blank page issue, there is some miss communication between the HTTP program, the php interpreter and the mysql database on the target server. So this has nothing to do with Glorias, Paulas or anyone else computer.

But can be solved. Might be difficult be I never have seen any problem, which can not be solved.

A little patience and I am certain, it will be!
