The commencement speaker at the Clarke School for Hearing and Speech in Northampton, Massachusetts a few months back was Stephen Hopson, the first deaf person in aviation history to earn an instrument-rated pilot’s license. God bless Stephen.

Managing with Style

Friday, June 17th, 2011

When I helped people with job search and resumes, etc., I used to give a very quick test called Managing with Style. This was from a book by Rowe and Mason. The book was based on Rowe and Mason’s Ph.D. thesis which was about Operating Styles.

I liked this test. It was quick to take — probably five minutes — ten minutes at most. To go over it,  took maybe ten minutes as well. As any personality test, it gives a trend. (more…)

The High Road

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Heavenletter #3185,  entitled The High Road, elicited quite a few comments on the Heavenletter Spiritual Community Forum from people who quit their jobs in order not to compromise themselves.

Now, I’m a person who quit quite a few jobs because something wasn’t quite right with them or the organization, and I had my standards.

Looking back, I quit too easily. Looking back, I think I was like being Bette Davis in a movie. I think I was turning myself into a heroine. I would leave in a huff. I’m sure I thought (more…)

2 more job roads not taken

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

There was a job in San Francisco that I really wanted. The job was advertised in the paper — Assistant to the Head of the USO.  For those who might not know, USO stands for United Service Organizations.  The mission of the USO is to provide morale, welfare, and recreation-type services to uniformed military personnel.

The woman who headed up the USO in San Francisco interviewed me. I thought the world of her, much the way Lauren admires Phenomenal Boss.  I wanted to work with this lady whose name I don’t remember. She thought (more…)

Further Response from Phenomenal Boss

Monday, June 29th, 2009

You will get an idea from the following email from the Phenomenal Boss what a peach he is.  Alas, his email is a rejection.

We hope it’s not over yet. Lauren has a job-search strategist in her court (me) and has one more step she can take before taking no for an answer.

After you read P.B.’s email,  read Lauren’s response.  Her response is based on the idea that (more…)

Sense of Direction

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

I think of jobs I was offered and didn’t take. All the turns in the road that I didn’t avail myself of. What if I had? How would my life be different? Or would it?

God in Heavenletters™  tells us not to look back. We can’t change a thing. We all know that. I know that, and yet I still do it.

There are six job possibilities I didn’t take that (more…)
