Those of you who frequent the Heavenletter Spiritual Community Forum and this blog know Chuck Gebhardt, M.D. You know him through the profound and loving comments he posts.
For those of you who do not yet know Chuck well, here’s something I lifted from his blog:
I want to make a difference in the world. When I leave this physical body that I feel so attached to, I want the world to be at least a little better place for my having been born in it having made the choices that I have.
I want to do useful things, but not just useful for me so I will live longer, be more comfortable and have greater freedom to fulfill my wishes; I want to help bring these things about for everyone that I can, as much as I can.
This is the Chuck I know. He is always thinking of others. He is someone who takes responsibility for others. He’s the doctor who cares and that, when a doctor is needed, we all would love to have him.

Incidentally, Chuck has plastered Heavenletters™ on his blog. Wow, he holds Heavenletters™ dear. Thank you, Chuck.

Here’s one more item about Chuck before I let you read what he wrote for this blog: Chuck started out as a delinquent! Don’t you love it?!!
Here is the guest entry that Chuck wrote especially for us:
The Many Levels of Healing
About twenty years ago, I underwent a sort of epiphany that caused me to realize that there is a non-physical, spiritual source behind everything we see in our physical world. Looking for answers brought me to Heavenletters.
I posted a recent article on my blog about alternative medicine and how it relates to standard medical care. In Gloria’s comment after my article, she made a statement that really got me thinking. Her statement was simply: “God is the source of all healing.”

On this, Gloria and I are in complete agreement.
In the context of my blog, I started re-visiting old questions.
Why do we seem to need physicians and other healers when we are sick? How does God decide when His healing should come about and when illness will be allowed to worsen?
Well, as I am sure you know, you can go on and on with these kinds of questions forever, but my questioning did result in some helpful insights I would like to share. Hence my title today: The Many Levels of Healing.
The first, and most superficial level of healing, is the environment I spend most of my day working with: modern science-based medicine. It has assumed that illness and disease are always due to physical factors. At this level, healing solutions are almost always found to be medicines or surgery. It works; I use it and see its reliable results every day.

At a somewhat deeper level are some of the healing methods like acupuncture and acupressure, along with other techniques sometimes lumped together as “energy medicine.” These are mostly physical techniques, but they are believed to access a form of “energy” that has yet to be physically measured. Their impact of these energies on various illnesses, though, has been well demonstrated.

At an even deeper level are various indications that much illness has emotional roots from earlier in our lives. Many of us have been exposed to events that have traumatized us or emotionally injured us in some way. These traumas tend to get buried deep in our psyche. There is much less data available to support these contentions, but those that are available suggest that accessing this level may very powerfully improve our lives.
Perhaps there are other levels, deeper yet, that I have no understanding of, but I believe I am beginning to become aware of the ultimate and deepest level of healing. This would be on the level that Heavenletters™ is speaking. This would be on the level of our understanding of Who God is and our relationship to Him. Seen in this light, our emotional distance from Him, and our misunderstanding of our relationship to Him, would be the ultimate source of all disease, and it would follow that our intimate awareness of our Oneness with Him would be the ultimate healing.

This suggests that healing at deeper levels is more effective and more profound than those that are more superficial.
However, if, for some reason, we cannot access the deeper levels, the more superficial levels become important and can provide much relief.
Finally, my understanding from this schema of levels suggests to me that all levels act lawfully. As examples, to be effective at one level you must use the right drugs, or at another level you need to learn to use acupressure effectively.
Even at the very deepest levels we need to appreciate and truly understand that love of God and appreciation for His goodness is healing and our rejection of Him and His love can lead to suffering. This understanding helps us reconcile the observation that healing does not always follow our prayers with our belief in an infinitely loving God who always wants to see us healed and joyful.

My thanks and deep appreciation to the Heavenletters team for making the beautiful inspiration of these wonderful letters so readily available.
Love, Chuck
