When I wrote these vignettes which began with the Mongol colored pencils, I entitled each vignette the name of a color.  Some of my favorite names of colors were magenta, heliotrope, burnt umber, lemon yellow. I tried to choose the name of a color as a title to fit each vignette. There were too many vignettes for me to be able to make that idea really work, however. (more…)

Not long ago, a friend of mine was saying that her mother and father never once told stories about their childhood. Not one story.  This seemed odd to my friend and certainly odd to me, for I grew up on my parents’ s stories of their childhoods — or lack of childhood, for back then when they lived, their lives were all about survival and work and not play. On Tuesday mornings, Beverly goes to her marriage counselor. Hal doesn’t.  Mr. Ramundo is patient and gentle and kind. That’s why Hal won’t go to him. He’s not manful enough for Hal. It’s not that Beverly finds the counselor tremendously productive, but he is kind and understanding and not one bit critical.

Except for names and location, here begins quite an accurate account of what it was like back when I was married.  This is in the form of a story which I had originally written long long ago when everything was fresh in my mind, or I would not have begun to remember all these details. I wonder now, looking back, at how no one did intervene for my niece. Wasn’t there a teacher or school counselor? Wasn’t there someone? So far as I know, this dear soul, my niece, Princess Bonita, never had someone to talk to who could have helped her gain a sense of selfhood and worth, at least, not until later when there was no choice.
